Albuquerque police arrest man caught on video punching, kicking dog

News

An Albuquerque man has been arrested because of what a stranger recorded him doing to his dog at a park.

Police say 20-year-old Devlin Rubi was caught on video punching and kicking his dog in the head, slamming the dog’s head into his SUV, and dragging it by the collar. Officers say you can hear the dog whimpering in pain.

It happened at the Academy Hills Park near Eubank and Juan Tabo. The witness who took the video shared it with Animal Welfare officers who turned it over to Albuquerque police.

Rubi was arrested early Wednesday morning. Dog owners who frequent the park were surprised to hear what happened there.

“That’s crazy ’cause everybody around here loves their dog so much, and this park is always full of people walking their dogs,” Trinidad Maez said.

Rubi faces one count of animal cruelty. On his Facebook page, he admits to doing it, saying he did it to teach the dog a lesson and that he spends more money on his dog than anyone in Albuquerque.

The report says Rubi had adopted the dog from the shelter last March. The shelter is holding the dog and another while the investigation continues.
