Albuquerque native sparks new push to bring back Putt-Putt

One man is trying to bring a longtime Albuquerque tradition back to life. The Putt-Putt on San Mateo has been closed for a little over a year but was the source of memories for 45 years. Now, Derek Hargrove is hoping to make this a popular hang out for families again.

The mini golf location along San Mateo and McLeod closed in November 2017.  “It was such a great place to play and I built a lot of really strong memories there,” Morty Mortenson of Albuquerque said.

It was sad news for people who grew up here. “I’d been there countless times actually when I was a kid,” Mario Gorman of Albuquerque said.

Now, one man is hoping to bring it back. “And to drive past this every day and see it closed, it’s just heartbreaking,” said Derek Hargrove.

He said the Putt-Putt was a place where families created memories since it opened in 1972. “It’s really about bringing back the memories we all made here,” said Hargrove.

He started a GoFundMe to raise money in the effort to re-open the once busy attraction. “We’re hoping that people will chip in and it will make investors realize that this is something that will work, this is something that people want and this is something that we’re gonna do,” he said.

The location is hard to miss, with large figures like the giraffes, or the castle. Hargrove said they hope to keep the look and the prices low. “The initial idea is to keep it the way that it is so that people have some place to go where they can remember a great time like that.”

People who spoke to KRQE News 13 think it’s a really good idea. “I think that’s a great idea. I mean for it was a staple of my childhood, so I hope other people can enjoy it too,” said Mortenson.
