Zoo hosts Orangutan Awareness Celebration

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M .(KRQE) - Saturday was all about Orangutans at the BioPark.

The zoo hosted an "Orangutan Awareness Celebration" at the animal's habitat.

The BioPark says Orangutans are quickly disappearing from the wild and could be extinct in the next 10 years.

Saturday's event included Discovery Stations with interactive activities, craft making and more.

The zoo says many rainforests are being cut at alarming rates due to palm oils, which are found in many household items and foods.

"We normally ask people to pick just one staple item in your household that you absolutely have to have and switch that to a more sustainable palm oil option," says Sara Allison, zookeeper.

The BioPark Zoo is home to five Orangutans, including Pixel, who turned five-years-old in April.
