Rio Rancho Fire Rescue receives grant to assist in cancer prevention

Local News

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Rio Rancho fire crews are unveiling new equipment to help reduce the risk of cancer, all thanks to Firehouse Subs.

Through an $11,000 grant from Firehouse Subs’ Public Safety Foundation, the station was able to purchase a new washer and dryer with special technology that rids clothing of harmful chemicals, and bunker gear that helps protect firefighters from carcinogens on scene.

Experts say firefighters have a 1-2 times greater risk of developing cancer due to these exposures. Since 2005, the foundation has donated more than $227,000 to fire crews in New Mexico.
