ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A State Police officer shot an armed man on I-25 on Tuesday morning, causing closures on the busy highway for hours.
A trooper was doing a welfare check on an abandoned Jeep when he says a man carrying a gun started walking toward him. Investigators say at some point, the situation escalated and the officer fired at least one shot, hitting the man.
They say the suspect was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not say if the suspect pointed the gun or shot at the officer.

Police have not released the name of the suspect or the officer involved in the shooting, but say the officer is usually stationed in Albuquerque. He was, however, taking part in the traffic safety operation requested by the Albuquerque Police Department.
The officer has been placed on standard leave, while the shooting is being investigated.
