NMSP, BCSO help Albuquerque woman celebrate 107th birthday

Local News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police and Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office helped celebrate the 107th birthday of an Albuquerque woman Wednesday. Martha Chavez as the wife of Nash Garcia, the first State Police officer to die in the line of duty in 1952. State Police say, nearly 70 years later, she is still an important part of their family.

The family of Chavez says they usually celebrate with a party but because of the pandemic they had to get creative. The family reached out to law enforcement to see if they’d do a drive-by parade to celebrate their mom’s birthday.

“I can’t believe this turnout, it was so beautiful, and it meant so much to the family,” said family member Yvonne Vega.

Officers gave Chavez birthday gifts and family and friends sang songs to celebrate.
