ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A man is dead after a police shooting along Central Avenue on Monday afternoon.
It happened around 3 p.m. after officers say they were confronted by a man with a gun on Central near San Pedro. The Albuquerque Police Department says officers saw that man crossing Central with what looked like a gun in his hand.
When that man got onto the sidewalk, officers say they saw him waving the gun around. That’s when the officers moved in and identified themselves as police.
It’s unclear exactly what happened at that point, but APD says something happened between the man and officers that led to at least one officer opening fire, killing him. Witnesses say they heard several shots.
“We have located what appears to be the handgun that officers initially located or identified next to the deceased’s body,” APD Chief of Staff John Ross said.
“We saw a SWAT team on that corner over there kind of like it was a movie scene, and them on a line and start shooting eight rounds,” a witness said.
The man who was killed has since been identified by police as 28-year-old Orlando Abeyta. APD says it’s still early in the investigation and are asking any witnesses to call 242-COPS.
