ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The man accused of stabbing his wife 50 times in front of their children agreed to a plea deal Tuesday.

Jerry Chavez was arrested in 2013 when he broke into the home of his estranged wife, Sandra Ferrales, dragged her out of the shower and stabbed her 50 times while their 6 and 12-year-old sons pleaded with 911 dispatchers to help them.

Chavez plead no contest to first degree murder.

“Something I thought I could never do I ended up doing. But as I said I have to live with this the rest of my life. I’m not trying to get off easy. I take full responsibility,” said Chavez.

The remaining charges were dropped.

Under the plea deal, Chavez will get life in prison and be eligible for parole after 30 years.
