Albuquerque family’s dog killed protecting family from armed robber

An Albuquerque family is still grieving after their family dog was shot and killed by an armed robber who was on the run from police.

The dog’s owner tells KRQE News 13 he died doing what he did best, protecting his family.

“When we saw of his litter, kind of just fell in love with the look of him,” said Liz Hewitt.

Bartleby was only a puppy when Liz Hewitt and her family adopted him from the Humane Society more than 11 years ago.

“He was the dog that would just love you, no matter what, all you had to do was look at him. If you pet him, he would love you for the rest of his life,” she says.

But Bartleby’s life was cut short on Wednesday evening.

Albuquerque Police say an armed man robbed someone and took off into a nearby neighborhood.

“As he’s jumping fences, he does fire upon one of the dogs in the backyard and that dog is deceased right now,” said Ofc. Daren DeAguero.

Bartleby was shot in the eye and Hewitt believes his main priority was still protecting the family.

“When he was shot, unfortunately, he ran into the house and wanted to make sure the kids were okay,” she said.

Police say shots were fired and the suspect was killed. They have yet to release his name.

Even though Hewitt lost a member of her family, she’s trying to show compassion for the killer.

“I don’t want to judge anybody for their actions, you know? Everybody’s living their own lives and it can be very hard,” she said.

Just in case Bartleby didn’t already know, Hewitt wants to remind him of something every dog loves to hear.

“He was a good boy. He was always a very good boy and my big guy is gone. I hope that he will protect over us in the after life,” she said.

Hewitt says the family’s backyard is right next to an arroyo and they do get intruders from time to time.

They are considering putting up barbed wire on their backyard fence.

Police have not said if the suspect pointed a gun at police or shot at them.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with the cost of Bartleby’s death.
