ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A donut made by an Albuquerque donut shop in the image of a popular tropical drink got Food Network’s attention recently.

Rebel Donut’s piña colada donut is one of a dozen from around the country named “Best in Dough” in that TV network’s magazine, an honor bestowed upon fun donuts.

“I just found out about it yesterday and I ran to Walgreen’s and got a copy of the magazine,” said Rebel Donuts owner Carrie Mettling.

The piña colada donut starts with a vanilla cake donut. It’s dipped in coconut rum glaze and then raw coconut. It then gets pineapple buttercream frosting and a cherry on top.

“Sometimes we put umbrellas in them,” said Mettling.

Despite its playful look, the piña colada donut, much like the alcoholic drink, isn’t for kids.

“There’s actual real rum in the glaze,” Mettling said. “We have a small line of adult donuts and this is one of them, but we can make it virgin also.”

This isn’t the first time one of Rebel Donut’s creations has gotten significant attention. Its Breaking Bad-themed “Blue Sky” donut, which has a blue look reminiscent of the blue meth featured on that show, earned several fans including actor Aaron Paul.
