An Albuquerque teacher, tired of seeing food wasted, has his charter school joining a program that is saving food, and money.
This is the first week the school has been participating in the program, and they are already saving hundreds of pounds of food, every day.
Every day, Joshua Cruz a shelter assistant at Saint Martin’s loads up his van with at least 100 pounds of food, donated by El Camino Real Academy.
Typically, the sealed unopened packages would have gone in the trash.
“I noticed a lot of the students were throwing a lot of the food away,” Orlando Vigil, says.
Orlando Vigil, a resource teacher at El Camino Real, got tired of wasting what he estimates to be thousands of dollars in food, each week.
“That’s taxpayers money, that’s a lot of money,” Vigil says.
So Vigil reached out to Albuquerque Public Schools, looking for a way to donate the unwanted food.
Now Saint Martins Hospitality Center picks up the leftover food daily, taking it back to the shelter for those who would go hungry, otherwise.
Vigil says if the district gets involved, it would save not only wasted food but taxpayers dollars.
Right now, Vigil says he believes about 15 schools are involved in the program. In order to participate, each school has to abide by guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
