Albuquerque Academy alum. Alex Bregman picked 2nd in MLB draft

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) –  Albuquerque native, Alex Bregman, was picked second of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft on Monday.

The LSU shortstop is now in the Houston Astros organization.

Bregman was first drafted by the Boston Red Sox coming out of high school in 2012 in the 29th round as a second baseman. Bregman’s second time in the draft is considerably better. The former Albuquerque Academy star is the highest New Mexico product selected in the draft.

Bregman helped his team punch their ticket to Omaha Sunday night in a six to three victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the Baton Rouge Super Regional. Bregman’s two run single, up the middle in the eight, brought separation in a one to nothing game.

Bregman batted .312 this season with 9 home runs and 49 RBI.

Bregman is also up for the Golden Spikes Award.
