AFD gets new name

The Albuquerque Fire Department has a new name aimed at better reflecting what it does.

Now it will be called Albuquerque Fire Rescue to reflect the high number of medical calls it handles.

Those calls account for about 80 to 90 percent of the departments call volume.

The Keller Administration decided it was time for an update.

The department will phase in the new name on its stations, uniforms and equipment over the next several years as items need replacing.

Firefighters pay for their own uniforms.

City officials say relabeling the trucks will cost thousands, but they will do so responsibly.
