58 cars damaged in fire at Albuquerque apartment complex

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Authorities are investigating what caused a massive fire at a southeast area apartment located in the 1100 block of Cardenas SE.

Neighbors nearby say they saw flames up to 40 feet high in the gated lot. They say it broke out around midnight with flames as tall as surrounding buildings that lit up the parking lot.

Many neighbors said they heard what sounded like fireworks going off about 30 minutes before fire officials arrived.

“Around 11:30, me and my husband heard pops, like gunshots,” said a man who lives at the complex.

Firefighters contained the fire quickly but said people need to stay out of the parking area because it’s not safe due to structural damage to the carports.

“It’s always difficult when vehicles are involved just cause of all the chemicals and the upholstery and of course the gasoline.” said Melissa Romero the Public Information Officer for the Albuquerque Fire Department.

At this time there has been no word on what sparked the fire.

According to the Albuquerque Fire Department, 58 cars were damaged or destroyed.

Arson investigators are expected to begin their investigation.
