2019 will bring lots of new development to iconic stretch of Albuquerque

There will be a lot of new sights in Albuquerque in 2019 and lots of new development.

One city councilor believes an iconic part of the city will be unrecognizable. Lots that have been sitting empty for years will finally be showing some signs of life.

People in Albuquerque say the city is ready for a fresh start.

“2018 kind of same old same old, unfortunately,” says Erin Aemisegger.

Things like Netflix, TopGolf and penguins all on the way next year.

“Actually we didn’t know that they weren’t here but we are looking forward to them coming,” says Kathy Mulhern.

After a year of setbacks, the penguin chill should open in the spring.

It’s not just penguins, City Councilor Pat Davis says new developments are all around and by the end of 2019 a stretch of Albuquerque’s most famous street will have a new look.

“We’re seeing a whole bunch of new properties being developed sort of revitalizing Central and all of that is sort of coming to fruition in 2019,” Davis says.

Along Central three major developments are all in the works. The highlands, across from Presbyterian, a development many are calling a “mini-city.”

Up by Nob Hill, a 100-unit apartment complex is coming to the site of the old Royal Hotel.

And the new look De Anza is set to open in April.

“It’s not just an apartment complex or a restaurant its that and a boutique hotel a tourist attraction apartments, condos, restaurants,” Davis says.

Davis says the city’s growth is not just on the mother road.

“If you want to see what the future holds look at Mesa Del Sol. Netflix is coming to life,” Davis says.

“I’m really excited because I’ve been noticing that it’s been drawing more acting jobs,” Aemisegger says.

All things considered, residents are hopeful for what’s coming.

“Anything that adds to the community and builds it up we’re for,” Mulhern says.

Another project that will be done next year is the I-25 Rio Bravo interchange should be good to go in the summer time.

News 13 also wanted to know if Winrock was going to start looking like that animation the developers unveiled a few years ago with the hotel park and lake, we did not hear back from them for an update.
