ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – At least one person is dead after a fire tore through part of apartment complex Thursday morning.
Fire officials said at least two people were injured and neighbors said a 23-year-old male was killed inside the apartment.
Flames erupted just after 2 a.m. Albuquerque Fire Department officials said when they got there, one of the upper apartments was engulfed and the fire was spreading fast. They said two of the three adults inside escaped the blaze.
One of them – a woman – was rescued from the second story balcony by fire crews. A man also got out but is severely burned and in critical condition.
Neighbors said the man who was killed is from Santa Fe and was visiting his friends who live in the apartment. Neighbors also said they heard an argument inside the apartment a couple of hours before it caught fire.
“We heard screaming. My grandson heard the breakage of the glass. I didn’t hear that. Then we went from there and then it went up in full flames,” said neighbor Anette L. Gomez.
Officials said an adult male who lives next to the apartment was also injured. He suffered cuts and bruises while evacuating and was taken to the hospital.
Fire investigators still don’t know a cause of the fire and whether or not it was accidental.
There are a number of people who will be out of their homes because of this fire.
