Lexiam Heart Foundations helps families affected by congenital heart defects

Living

One in every 100 babies in this country, is born with a congenital heart defect and according to the American Heart Association, it is the most common birth defect. Lexiam Heart Foundation helps families so they don’t go through this alone.

Many families must travel to receive support and care as there is only one pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon in the area. This can get very expensive and Lexiam helps families with that cost.

Along with surgery, heart families also deal many times with feeding issues, developmental delays, years of physical and occupational therapy, and the parents can often suffer from PTSD from all the things they experience in the hospital.

Lexiam Heart Foundation is completely privately funded by donations and doesn’t have any state or national organization that backs the foundation. The foundation’s board is completely volunteer, so all of the money goes towards helping families. Along with travel expenses, it also sends gifts and care packages to families periodically, to let them know they are not alone. It also sends memorial gifts to families who lose their children to CHDs.

Thursday, February 7 is Paint and Sip for CHD Awareness. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Albuquerque’s St. Clair Winery and in Bosque Farms with Kae’s Painting 101.
