Tamara Francisco has a brand new ride.
For ten years, she dreamed of owning a cherry-red Chrysler 300. Once homeless and stuck in a seemingly never-ending cycle of addiction, that dream seemed like an impossibility.
That is, until she came into contact with Crossroads for Women, a non-profit organization working to break the cycle of homelessness and imprisonment, while rehabilitating the lives of New Mexican women.
With the number of female inmates in New Mexico on the rise, programs like Crossroads can play a key role in breaking this cycle. They offer housing and basic supplies, vocational training, support groups and the indelible connection of women who are fighting the same battle for recovery.
Tamara graduated from Crossroads four years ago. She continues attending classes with the organization, as well as New Mexico Highlands University. She’ll soon receive her Bachelors in Social Work, hoping to give back to those stuck in the same position she was in a few short years ago.
Six months ago, she got the keys to a brand new Chrysler 300. Her “hot car” is one of the many rewards obtained through her dedication to sobriety.
She’ll soon close on her first home and now she carries herself with pride and respect. However, the most important victory of all is with her family. As Tamara says, “my children have a mom again.”
