Facebook is giving back to Valencia County.
More than a dozen nonprofits and schools were awarded grants Wednesday totaling nearly $170,000. It’s all part of Facebook’s inaugural community action grants.
All 13 projects address critical community needs by putting the power of technology to use for community benefit, connecting people online or off, or improving local STEM education.
Facebook opened its new data center in Los Lunas last month.

Belen High School
This grant will support Promethean Interactive Whiteboard Technology.
Belen Middle School
This grant will support Arduino coding exercises for students, in partnership with New Mexico MESA Inc.
Belen Public Library
This grant will support a Computer Learning Lab to provide basic computer skills and workforce development training to patrons of the library.
El Ranchito de Los Ninos
This grant will fund computers and IT support for high-risk children in foster care.
Explora Science Center
This grant will support 10 family STEM events through the Explora Community Science program.
Katherine Gallegos Elementary School
This grant will support computer and robotics kits for the school coding club, using code.org and girlswhocode.com curricula.
Los Lunas High School JROTC
This grant will support participation in the High-Altitude Balloon Challenge and Sea Perch STEM competitions.
Los Lunas Public Library
This grant will support after-school programs that encourage STEM learning among area youth.
New Mexico MESA Inc.
This grant will support computer coding starter kits and workshops in eight different schools in Valencia County.
RIO Communities Optimist Club
This grant will support STEM camps for Valencia County students, focusing on the engaging, hands-on experience.
Rural Education Advancement Program
This grant will support STEM workshops and competitions at local schools throughout Valencia County.
UNM Valencia Campus
This grant will support the summer technology program at UNM Valencia.
Valencia County Literacy Council
This grant will support literacy and tutoring programs in Valencia County, including basic reading and English for speakers of other languages (ESL).
