How often does my garage door spring need to be replaced?
Garage door torsion springs are rated by cycle life, with 10,000 cycles (a cycle being one opening and one closing action) the typical industry standard. With the garage door becoming the main entrance, we are seeing springs break at the end of their cycle life about every 3 to 7 years.
If the door has more than one spring, it is recommended to replace all of them at the same time to avoid further inconvenience and expense in the near future.
If your spring is breaking closer to the 3 year time frame, a higher cycle life spring can be engineered so that it will last 3, 4 even 5 times longer. Ask about automatic cycle counters that will let you know when your spring is getting near the end of its useful life.
Why should I use a professional installing dealer?
At ABC Door we believe that the installation of a garage door and a garage door opener is not a do-it-yourself job. A garage door is frequently the largest moving object in your home, and for most families today it is the main entrance and exit for the home.
With potentially dangerous counter-balance systems and a large number of moving parts the installation can be very technical.
Connecting springs is a dangerous business for those who have the wrong tools or little experience. Furthermore, a professional installing dealer can be very helpful with potential warranty claims as he has intimate knowledge of the product and generally a strong relationship with the manufacturer this can be very helpful to a homeowner in the long run. Also, we dispose of your old door for you!
Garage door openers are also potentially troublesome for the do-it-yourself homeowner. An incorrect install can severely damage your door and cause problems in the future. When one of our licensed and bonded technicians comes to install your opener, he will also service and adjust your garage door. Without a properly balanced door that is working well, the life of your door opener can also be severely diminished.
How often should I service my door and opener?
Garage doors should usually be serviced annually. The garage door opener safety system should be tested monthly. With the constant up and down moving of your garage door, the system will show some wear and get out of adjustment over time. Running the door on worn parts and being out of adjustment will make it unsafe and ware out the rest of the door sooner. Proper service of your door and opener will assure a long-term smooth operation of the largest moving object in your home.
Members of our Garage Door Safety Club enjoy annual inspections of their garage doors and openers.
Garage doors are so boring, isn’t there anything I can do to give it that WOW factor?
In the past, garage doors were boring, you did not have many choices. Fortunately today that is not the case.
The garage door has now become a major design feature for the front of the house. With the garage door covering 30%-50% of the front of most homes, a new designer door can make a real difference in the curb appeal of your home.
Replacing the garage door has also been one of the top 3 remodeling projects in cost vs value for the last 5 years.
Today’s doors are available in a variety of materials including wood, steel, aluminum, and composites. Turn of the century Carriage House doors all the way to Ultra Modern doors with a wood and mirror finish are available. Just adding some windows to the door can make a huge impact on the overall look.
Here in New Mexico, steel doors with a woodgrain finish are becoming very popular.
Let us know the look you are after and we will do our best to make it happen!
