ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An Albuquerque soap shop is creating a unique offering for an upcoming craft fair to benefit the Breast Cancer Resource Center: 14-karat gold bars of soap.
The soap is being created by Orange Magnolia Soapworks and will be sold for $100 a bar and is made using 14k gold flakes, Moroccan oil and magnolia flower essential oil. The soap will be sold at Friday's "Think Pink and Keep it Local" craft fair, which is a key fundraiser for the nonprofit that helps anyone affected by cancer.
"We are making history," says soapmaker Lee Nicholos. "We are the first in Albuquerque, in fact in New Mexico, to make 14k gold soap."
Nicholos, who has been making soap for 35 years, says he's using the recipe his grandmother used in the 1950s when she was making soap for a wealthy customer.
Nicholos says the soap is what he would consider a mini Fountain of Youth.
"It might be an African or Egyptian myth, but it's true, it will make you young," say Nicholos. "You are going to shimmer, who when the sun hits the face it's going to take off 20 years."
The "Think Pink and Keep it Local" event takes place this Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Albuquerque Uptown. There will also be many other offerings from many other artists, including more modestly priced soap.
