SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) - A shooting involving three relatives left one teen dead, another wounded and a third in jail, Silver City police report.
Late Friday morning police received a report of a shooting in the 1600 block of North Swan Street, and a few minutes later officers were called to the Gila Regional Medical Center emergency room where two men with gunshot wounds had just arrived.
There Eric Vega, 19, was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to his chest. Jose Varela, 17, was reported to be in serious condition with a wound in his abdomen, according to a statement from Silver City police.
Shortly after 2 p.m. police learned their suspect, Filemon Varela Jr., 16, was at the state Children, Youth and Families Department office. He was taken into custody there and confessed to the shooting the pair with a 9 mm pistol, according to police.
All three teens are related although the statement from police did not detail the relationships.
At last report city officers, Grant County sheriff's deputies and the Deming/Luna County SWAT team had surrounded the house where the shooting occurred after a witness reported a person had run into the house and not come out.
Varela is charged with an open count of murder, aggravated battery, tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 19.
