SAN JUAN COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) - Fifteen people were allowed to return to their homes in San Juan County after being evacuated during the Arena Canyon Fire.
The Arena Canyon Fire is located about five miles from the New Mexico/Colorado border, west of Navajo Lake near Highway 511.
CO 172 is closed at the New Mexico state line, south of Ignacio. Motorists are not being permitted to travel southbound into New Mexico due to the wildfire according to Colorado Department of Transportation.
Officials say the fire, which is burning on private and federal land, is estimated at 128 acres.
State Forestry, San Juan County and federal agencies are fighting the fire from the ground and from the air.
Multiple resources from the region are cooperating to fight this fire on the ground and from the air, including:
- Los Pinos Fire District from Ignacio, Colorado
- San Juan County New Mexico Fire Districts
- District Five (5), Blanco
- District Three (3), Cedar Hill
- District Seven (7), Center Point
- District Two (2), Flora Vista
- Farmington Fire District
- BLM and U.S. Forest Service Carson District
The Cottonwood Day Use area at Navajo Lake State Park is been closed to house fire crews. Signs are being posted to direct visitors to other areas where they can access the river for fishing and tables.
At this time, the lightning-caused fire is 40 percent contained.
