Las Cruces, NM (KRQE) - It's the kind of "Help Wanted" advertisement that you'd only see in the year 2011. Virgin Galactic is advertising for Pilot-Astronauts.
Virgin Galactic posted the job listing on its website over the weekend. The space company is working on developing the first commercial spaceflight out of Spaceport America in New Mexico.
The listing does say a lot of experience at the helm of passenger jets and high-performance jets is necessary. It also adds that spaceflight experience is an advantage.
The ad definitely generated a lot of talk around the Sunport airplane hangers.
"Before, the (job) opportunities were in airline logistics and freight," Kyle Preston, General Manager of Del Sol Aviation, said. "Now, we're going to see a new added rating where people can work as a private astronaut."
Virgin Galactic said the job was first listed two days ago. More than 50 people have already applied. Virgin Galactic would not say how much the job pays.
