Mayor Keller signs bill banning coyote killing contests

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Mayor Tim Keller signed a bill banning coyote killing contests in Albuquerque.

It is now illegal to organize, sponsor or participate in a coyote killing contest within city limits.

Ranchers say the contests are a tool to manage packs of coyotes that threaten livestock, but supporters of the bill say killing animals for fun is cruel.

The bill also asks state lawmakers to pass the same legislation throughout New Mexico.
