Fans of spoken word, calligraphy and unique art are in for a treat with the Poet's Picnic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- - The Poet's Picnic is preparing for a day of art, music, and poetry on the lovely grounds of the Open Space Visitor Center!

On Saturday, May 26 from 10 am to 4 pm, lovers of poetry, unique art, and the outdoors will be treated to the Poet's Picnic, a free event at the Open Space Visitor Center, overlooking 18 acres of farmland, the Rio Grande’s Bosque and the Sandia Mountains!

Albuquerque’s calligraphy society Escribiente, the New Mexico Book Arts Guild Libros, the New Mexico State Poetry Society NMSPS, the Open Space Alliance, and dozens of local poets have come together for this unique art exhibit and day of spoken word poetry.

Chapbook sales:

The stunning new 2018 Poets’ Picnic chapbook is printed—and includes more full-color art this year by members of Escribiente, Albuquerque’s Calligraphy Society. The books have been hand-stitched by members of LIBROS, the New Mexico Book Arts Guild, There will be 200 numbered copies available for sale the day of the Poet's Picnic (May 26). All proceeds go toward the Open Space Alliance.

These will be sold at $10.00, but offered for $5.00 to poets who are included in the chapbook (limit three at this contributors’ price). 

Schedule of activities:

 10 a.m.: Haiku workshop and Ginko walk. RSVP for the workshop at 897-8831

ONGOING: Weathergram calligraphy exhibit throughout the grounds of the Visitor Center. Escribiente members will illustrate over 150 poems written by local poets and hang them on trees in the form of weathergrams, or “weather writings” as a temporary art installation.

12:00-3:30 p.m.: Book and information tables from Beatlick Press, Dos Gatos Press, Jules’ Poetry Playhouse, Village Books Press, and the New Mexico State Poetry Society, as well as individual and featured poets. 

11:30 a.m. -3:00 p.m.: Escribiente calligraphy demonstrations and Weathergram demos. Escribiente members will be on hand to demonstrate calligraphy and show how Weathergrams are made.

12:00 -12:45 p.m.: Picnic on the patio with a musical performance by Bébé La La.

1:00 - 2:30 p.m.: Poetry reading and open mic featuring poets Tina Carlson, John Macker, and Scott Wiggerman.

2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Poetry reading and open mic featuring poets Dorothy Alexander, Jesse Ehrenberg,  and Dale Harris.

Escribiente will be producing a limited number of hand-bound Poets Picnic chapbooks, available for sale the day of the Picnic. These will be sold at $10.00. These proceeds will go toward the Open Space Alliance.

The event features a special musical performance by Albuquerque’s own Bébé La La, a calligraphy art exhibit, demonstrations and workshops, and book sales by local presses including Village Books Press, Beatlick Press, and Dos Gatos Press. Bring a picnic lunch and spends a day with some of New Mexico’s most talented poets and calligraphers in a stunning outdoor setting!
