ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque already draws hundreds of pilots from around the world each October with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, but now there is a push to do something even bigger.
It's a race around the world not with hot air balloons but with Zeppelins and airships participating in the first-ever World Sky Race.
Sky Race organizers met with local leaders here to talk about this historic race and how New Mexico could be along the route as pilots circumnavigate the globe as early as March 2016.
Lighter-than-air skyships would race more than 30,000 miles. Eighteen back-to-back races would span more than 30 countries, which could include Egypt, France and the U.S.
Now, organizers say they're deciding between including Mexico or New Mexico in the race route.
They were in Albuquerque Friday to spread the word about the race and encourage a local planning committee that will showcase the state.
The New Mexico Tourism Department cabinet secretary talked Friday about what New Mexico has to offer.
“It is our skies, our culture and our cuisine. Everything,” Monique Jacobson said. "Every piece of it would make it a special destination as they look for places that are unique.
“That's what we think New Mexico is.”
The World Sky Race commissioner said they will decide this spring if this will be a stop along the route.
Organizers said there are about 35 Zeppelin and airship pilots worldwide they hope will participate.
