ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - After years of legal wrangling, Pornotopia is back.
It's an adult movie showcase that caused a stir, zoning fight and legal battle in Albuquerque
The film festival is making its return to the silver screen Friday night thanks to a recent ruling by the New Mexico Supreme Court. Organizers say they're not worried about anyone shutting them down this time.
The relaunch of the festival comes after seven years of arguing and six decisions in court.
Matie Fricker, an organizer of Pornotopia, says she was “surprised” to hear when the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled in their favor in September. Since then, she’s been scrambling to put together the festival, which will show six films in one night.
“We hope folks will come out and have a good time,” said Fricker.
Friday’s event marks the first Pornotopia since 2009. The city of Albuquerque censored the festival after its third run back then, claiming that the Guild Theatre in Nob Hill was violating zoning codes.
However, the state Supreme Court ruled that showing adult films one weekend a year doesn't make the theater an adult business. Organizers believe this time the city will leave them alone.
“We haven't heard anything from them. We hope not to tonight, but we'll see. You never know,” said Fricker.
So what inspires a pornography film fest? Organizers says it's not about trying to offend people or trying to get away with something vulgar in the name of free speech.
“Most porn is pretty awful, and we're the first one to admit it," Fricker said. "But to quote Annie Sprinkle, who is a wonderful sexologist, “The answer to bad porn isn't no porn. It's good porn."
She and others says it's an opportunity for a dialog about sex.
"There is really beautiful porn," Fricker continued. "There is porn that is different and highlights sexuality in a beautiful way."
“It's nice to see real people enjoy having sex,” added Pornotopia volunteer Sara Wilcox. "A lot of our films are couples that are making love to each other, and it's an amazing experience to watch two people that know how to pleasure each other and actually want to."
The festival runs from 4 p.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday. As of Friday afternoon, more than 70 people had already bought tickets.
The festival is put on by the "Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center,” which is a small private business that sells erotic merchandise. Organizers say they're already planning another Pornotopia next year.
