ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The debate on limiting abortion in Albuquerque spilled over into Bernalillo County when an anti-abortion group was accused of picketing at a doctor's home.
Now there's a push by some county commissioners to keep this from happening again.
Video posted on YouTube show a group of anti-abortion activists when they visited Albuquerque in August picketing outside of businesses and health clinics.
The video, posted online by the group, shows several members protesting in front of someone's home and a neighbor spraying water to chase them away.
The posting doesn't say where it happened, but county commissioner Maggie Hart-Stebbins says the group – survivors of the abortion holocaust – did the same thing outside a doctor's home in Bernalillo County.
“Individuals have a right to be in their homes, safe and secure. That should be a place where people feel confident that they're going to be safe,” said Maggie Hart-Stebbins.
She says protests like the one at the doctor's house are prohibited within city limits.
The county, however, has gaps in ordinances.
“They clearly felt threatened. There was a prolonged protest outside their house with graphic photographs, people chanting,” said Hart-Stebbins who is pushing an ordinance to fill in that gap and make it illegal in the county, too.
Bernalillo County commissioner Wayne Johnson tells says he believes the ordinance violates the First Amendment.
Hart-Stebbins says this ordinance is needed before the picketing can escalate.
“Once there's violence, it's too late,” she said.
An ACLU spokesman says they don't oppose the ordinance as the Supreme Court found this kind of prohibition constitutional in the 1980s.
This measure goes before the county commission on Tuesday for approval.
Commissioner Hart-Stebbins says because it is a hot button issue, they're planning on having extra security at Tuesday night's meeting.
