ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - We're learning more about the man hit and killed by a Rail Runner train.
Bernallilo police say Joseph Sandoval, 50, of Torreon was found dead near the tracks just south of the town's station.
He was in town visiting his brother, but police still don't know how he ended up on the tracks.
Police say Sandoval's mother was the first to learn of his death. She then called his brother.
Bernalillo police say it happened around 7 p.m. Saturday near the crossing at Lucero and Camino del Pueblo.
The engineer called dispatch, saying she saw someone lying near the tracks, but she couldn't stop in time.
When the train stopped in Santa Fe, State Police found hair and blood on of the cars.
Police Chief Julian Gonzales says a part of the train hit Sandoval in the back of his head - and that's what caused his death.
Gonzales says they're still trying to figure out how or why Sandoval was on the tracks.
“It’s hard to really say. They could've been arguing, he could've fallen he could've fallen asleep, he could've been intoxicated and past out there,” Gonzales said. “We won’t know until a lot of those lab tests come back.”
Both Rail Runner and Amtrak use the line where Sandoval was hit.
Neighbors said someone had called Bernalillo police to report the man near the tracks, but no one showed up.
Gonzales couldn't say if they had in fact received a call.
