ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - Roswell police have released the name of their officer injured while handling traffic duties near the scene of a gunfight between a state officer and a suspect Monday.
Sgt. Steven Meredith was hit by a car after a semi-truck driver slammed into a line of stopped traffic setting off a chain reaction of crashes. He is a 17-year veteran of the Roswell Police Department.
Rosemary Becerra of Lake Arthur died in the crash on U.S. Highway 285 south of Roswell.
The gunfight, which followed a reported domestic dispute and high-speed chase, left a recently released bank robber dead and a New Mexico State Police officer with a bullet wound to the leg.
Meredith is still recovering in the hospital, but Roswell police say he is making "positive strides in his healing process."
A private party has opened an account at Pioneer Bank for donations to aid Meredith and his family, according to a Roswell police spokesperson.
