SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) - The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument and State Road 15 reopened Wednesday after being closed for several days because of flooding.
Flood waters peaked last Saturday along the West Fork of the Gila River, which runs through the monument. Although the dwellings, which are high up a side canyon are back open, the visitor center remains closed.
It's expected to reopen when water levels drop and necessary maintenance along the bridge is complete.
Also these recreation sites and corrals in the area are now open:
- Lower and Upper Scorpion Campgrounds
- Upper Forks Campground
- Woody’s and T.J. Corrals
However, the Grapevine Campground and Lower Forks camping area remain closed.
Doc Campbell’s Post in Gila Hot Springs remains open for business.
Forest managers are reminding visitors the potential for floods and flash floods still exists as even a small amount of rainfall adds to the current high water levels in all water carrying areas. Visitors can contact the local ranger district offices prior to visiting the Gila National Forest for updated information.
For information on the cliff dwellings, contact the Gila Visitor Center (575) 536.9461 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
