ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Police are investigating the shooting of a boy in southwest Albuquerque Wednesday, and they're looking for the teenage relative they said may have fired the shot.
A call came in around 12:20 p.m. saying a 12-year-old boy had been brought to Albuquerque Fire Station No. 7 with an apparent gunshot wound in his leg. He told police he was shot at his grandmother's house on 97th Street SW.
His aunt, who took the boy to the fire station, told KRQE News 13 she doesn't know what happened.
"I'm not too sure," Jackie Lopez said. "I was in my room, and when I came out I just saw blood on my nephew's leg, and I just took off with him."
Lopez said the seventh grader, who doesn't live at the house, had been playing with his cousins prior to the incident.
Wednesday afternoon APD was still trying to piece together the shooting. Police said quite a few people were at the house at the time of the shooting.
The house was sealed off until a search warrant was executed.
Police said they thought a 16-year-old relative of the boy fired the shot. Where that gun was and who owns the gun were still unknown. That teenage relative's location was also unknown.
"Right now, it's just an investigation," APD Officer Simon Drobik told KRQE News 13. "We're trying to gather all the information we can, speak to all the witnesses involved and figure out what happened."
Family members told News 13 that boy was doing well at UNM Hospital.
