NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, Thailand (AP) — Thai authorities say they might declare a state of emergency in part of southern Thailand to control rowdy rubber protesters after a riot injured dozens of police.
The protesters want the government to support rubber farmers who have suffered due to rubber prices steadily dropping since 2011 amid weaker demand in a sluggish global economy
Prime Minister's aide Suporn Atthawong says Tuesday the government is evaluating the situation to see if a special decree is needed to control violent protests in Cha-uat district in Nakhon Si Thammarat province.
Authorities said 77 policemen suffered minor injuries in the clash Monday.
Protesters hurled rocks, bricks and other objects at riot police and set fire to several police vehicles.
Provincial authorities had ordered demonstrators to leave the area.
