LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Shell officials on Monday begin talks in the southern city of Port Harcourt with representatives for the Bodo community on compensation and cleanup five years after one of the worst oil spills in Nigeria's history.
Nigeria's Bonga offshore field experienced two oil spills from Royal Dutch Shell pipelines that devastated a mangrove and fishing community in 2008. Although the oil giant has admitted responsibility for the spills, the impact is disputed.
London-based law firm Leigh Day, which filed the 2011 suit for the Bodo community, says some 16,000 fishermen and 30,000 inhabitants were affected by the spills that leaked 500,000 barrels of oil.
Shell says about 4,000 barrels were spilled and that the affected lagoon area did not sustain 16,000 fishermen.
