STOCKHOLM (AP) — President Barack Obama is seeking to showcase a softer side of American diplomacy during a 24-hour visit to Sweden.
Obama arrives Wednesday after an overnight flight from Washington, where Congress is considering his request for a military strike against Syria. Obama has been urging allies to support a strike too.
In Sweden, Obama will focus on climate change, trade and technology — areas where there's more consensus with European allies and less chance for controversy. Obama will meet with Sweden's king and prime minister, dine with leaders from other Nordic countries and honor the late Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, credited for saving thousands of Jews during the Holocaust.
The trip was hastily arranged after Obama canceled a summit in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin (POO'-tihn).
