SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — A 12-year-old endangered orangutan is the latest animal to die at Indonesia's largest zoo, which has been plagued by problems.
The female orangutan, named Nanik, was found dead Saturday in a quarantine facility at the Surabaya Zoo in East Java's capital.
Zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat said Thursday that Nanik, whose appetite dropped in the last two months, was moved to the facility two days earlier for intensive treatment of liver and intestinal disorders.
She was brought to the zoo seven years ago after being confiscated from an illegal owner.
Supangkat said that on average, about 20 animals die monthly at the zoo.
The zoo has been plagued by uncontrolled breeding, a lack of funding for general animal welfare and suspicions that staff members may be involved in illegal wildlife trafficking.
