ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Residents in a southwest neighborhood are now dealing with a soggy mess after a truck hit a fire hydrant, causing a sinkhole to form.
Officials with the water department say that the driver struck the fire hydrant on the corner of Metzgar Road and Skyway Court, causing the line to break. A truck was on site Thursday vacuuming up the water.
"All the water coming out of the hydrant at high pressure caused a sinkhole that the truck then sank into," said David Morris, Water Authority spokesman.
Initially, it took crews a lot of time to turn off the water due to some confusion about where the valve to shut off the water was located.
The fire department brought sandbags to help minimize the damage. However, neighbors are still worried about their homes.
"They put the sandbags down on my property both on my front door and my back door. They protect the inside, the inside looks protected so there is no damage right now inside the home, but the outside is completely flooded," Anna Olona said. "The planting area took over 3 feet of water so there is a significant amount of water."
Olona hasn't fully assessed the damage to her home, but she says it isn't just the water she's worried about. She's worried about what happened, and hopes this will remind neighbors to slow down.
"They go extremely fast on Metzgar. It's a straight away road and they take that turn super fast," Olona said.
The Water Authority says the water line was fixed late Thursday night.
"I think it got a little bit in the garage. It's stuffed full of boxes and stuff like that so I haven't torn into it yet," said neighbor Paul Holley.
The amount of damage the incident caused is unknown and crews could be cleaning this up for days.
When the water recedes they may need to repair a good chunk of the road because of the water damage.
