TAOS, N.M. (AP) - Taos has approved a high-performance building ordinance thatrequires homes and commercial buildings to meet minimum energyefficiency standards.
The ordinance, approved last week, mandates that residentialconstruction meet Home Energy Rating System standards thatgradually phase in starting this year, and commercial constructionmust meet Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design certifiedstandards beginning this year.
Sage West Consultants recommended HERS and LEED standardsbecause they offer builders wide latitude to innovate and low- orno-cost solutions in creating energy efficient buildings.
The town requires its own buildings meet energy-efficiencyrequirements.
The ordinance gives builders the option of paying fees insteadof complying, with fees going into a fund to help low-incomecitizens improve their homes' energy efficiency.
