SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) - Right now principals evaluate their teachers, but the state Public Education Department wants to base part of teacher evaluations on student test scores as well. That's what has so many teachers so upset.
Teachers claim that would force them to focus on testing instead of educating students.
"They're asking us to curtail the amount of education that we give kids, so now it's about memorization and not thinking," Eldorado High School teacher Sean Thomas said. "I think that's detrimental to the kids development."
But not all educators agree. Some say they support proposed changes by the PED.
"The bottom line is the system that we have right now does not work," said Kathy Oelsner-Sandoval, director of the ABQ. Math & Science Charter School.
They say testing students along with other changes could be a good first step when it comes to evaluating New Mexico teachers.
Both sides agree the current system is outdated, but they have yet to come up with a new system that satisfies everyone.
The Martinez administration took the issue before lawmakers last year, but it did not pass. Now the PED says it can make the changes without legislative approval, saying the federal government is requiring New Mexico to create a new teacher evaluation system.
