RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - Rio Rancho Public Schools officials last week approved aresolution to name the district's next elementary school afterslain Sandoval County sheriff's deputy Sgt. Joe Harris.
Plans for the elementary school are contingent on statefunding.
The Sandoval County Commission last month voted to name asheriff's office substation after Harris. The substation is nearthe Highway 550 New Mexico Rail Runner station.
Harris was shot and killed in July during a shootout at a cabinin the Jemez Mountains. Harris and Deputy Teresa Moriarty werestaking out the area to try to catch a wanted burglar.
The burglar, Joseph Burgess, was also shot and killed during theshootout.
