LAS CRUCES (KRQE) - Former governor Garrey Carruthers is the new president of New Mexico State University, but it was not a unanimous decision.
The board of regents voted three to two late Monday afternoon to pick the former republican governor to lead NMSU.
Carruthers has a doctorate in economics and has been dean of the university's business college since 2003.
He was governor from 1987 to 2001.
NMSU is the state's second largest university with 17,000 students enrolled at its main campus in Las Cruces.
