ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Supporters of a Saint Pius transgender teen , who was born a girl but wants to graduate as a boy, will turn in a petition Sunday to push the school to let the student wear a black gown.
That petition has collected more than 18,000 signatures worldwide and is growing.
Damian Garcia wants to wear a black gown that the boys wear instead of a white gown that girls wear.
Saint Pius says Damian must wear white because the teen has not had sexual reassignment surgery.
A family saw KRQE News 13's coverage Wednesday night and wanted to help.
"I begged my mom to help me with something that affects what Saint Pius has done because I thought it wasn't right for them to choose what gender he was," William Moorman said. "When I woke up the next morning my mom told me what she had done and by that morning we had almost 500 signatures."
The Moorman's will deliver the petition to Damian Sunday afternoon.
Damian's dad told KRQE News 13 he has another meeting with the school on Monday.
