Police in a southeastern New Mexico town are investigating the theft of money from the youth soccer league.
Carlsbad police say they suspect two people pocketed some of the program's funds, and they're working to find out just how much money might have been stolen.
"The fact that these people are in volunteer positions and say we'll step up, we'll help these kids, we'll do this for them, and then they steal from them," Detective Lt. Bryan Burns of the Carlsbad Police Department said..
According to Carlsbad police the soccer league reported possible embezzlement in early October. The league told police a surplus of money was drained from their bank account.
"It's pretty significant if you look at the loss they have," said Burns. "They went from a very positive number to trying to figure out how they're going to pay for this or pay for that."
Police won't go into detail about how much money they believe was stolen, but they do say it's enough to cause major financial problems for the program.
Carlsbad police say they've identified two suspects. One of them was a part of the soccer league board of directors, but has since left.
"We have reached out to the people and asked them to come in and provide us with information, and at this time they have chosen not to do that," said Burns.
The money stolen came from concession stand proceeds and registration fees.
Carlsbad police say they're looking through the league's credit card and all other paperwork to find out where this money may have gone.
