RUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) - The search continues for the suspect behind an attack in southeast New Mexico.
A female runner was attacked inside a public restroom at a popular sports complex in Ruidoso.
The White Mountain Sports Complex is usually buzzing with people playing a round of golf, running along the bike path or fetching toys at the dog park, but on Monday, this outdoor complex was quiet and Ruidoso police said a recent attack may be the reason why.
"She was haggard. She had obviously been through a traumatic event," said Ruidoso Police Detective Sgt. Ray Merritt. "She did have some abrasions, some bruising to her face and arms, that kind of thing. It was very apparent to us that she has been attacked physically."
Merritt said a 45-year-old woman was walking southbound on the 2.9 mile trail around 8 p.m. Thursday.
He said she saw a white male walking toward her and decided to enter the ladies room.
"Soon after, she went into the bathroom. She closed the stall and heard the bathroom door open back up. At that point, she realized there was someone else in the bathroom with her," said Merritt. "When she opened the stall door, the physical attack apparently happened."
Merritt said the running path the woman was on is heavily used by Ruidoso residents and violent incidents there are very uncommon.
"It's crazy that stuff like that can happen anywhere," said park-goer Sara Duncan.
The Village of Ruidoso is small, home to only about 12,000 people.
"People are definitely on edge," said Merritt. "This type of thing happens, unfortunately, whether you live in a small town like Ruidoso or you live in a large town like Albuquerque."
Duncan said even though the search for a suspect continues, she is not going to stop using the facility.
"It's sad, but that's just the world we live in. We're still going to live life and go where we want to go," said Duncan.
Police have learned that the getaway vehicle, a maroon long-bed Chevy pick up, had a turquoise centennial license plate.
It also had tinted windows and a sticker on the rear window or tailgate.
The attacker is described as a white male about 6 feet 2 inches tall in his mid 40s or early 50s. He has salt and pepper hair.
