CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) - An inmate in custody bolted from Municipal Court in Clovis Tuesday morning, and police believe he has since armed himself with a semiautomatic rifle.
Ruben Hernandez, 40, was wearing an orange jail jumpsuit after being transferred from the Curry County Detention Center after being charged with robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.
During the hearing he ran from the courtroom shortly before 11 a.m. and eluded capture as officers searched the area, according to a statement released by Police Chief Steve Sanders' office.
"We have reliable information Mr. Hernandez entered a residence nearby, change his clothing and potentially armed himself with a rifle," the statement said.
Hernandez may be wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and blue high-top shoes, the statement added.
A wanted poster released at the same time warns Hernandez may have an SKS rifle, a military-style carbine.
Hernandez is 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 165 pounds and has brown eyes, very short brown hair and a goatee.
Police said Hernandez should be considered "armed and very dangerous" and that anyone who makes contact should not attempt to apprehend him. Instead contact the Clovis Police Department at (575) 769-1921 or a local law-enforcement agency.
