SANTA FE (KRQE) - Mother's Day for one Santa Fe mom is filled with memories of her son's death after he was shot and killed in 2003, but she said she's also had to deal with threats from her son's killer and his family.
This year appears to be no different.
Santa Fe police said the killer's cousin, Steven Ruiz, was arrested Thursday night accused of threatening Anthony Jaramillo's family.
Jaramillo was 16 when he was killed on Mother's Day in 2003. Jaramillo's cousin said the holiday isn't filled with just flowers and cards. He said the holiday gifts for the family have included threats that sometimes even include guns.
The family said Phillip Herrera, the man who confessed to shooting Jaramillo, and his family are behind it all.
Herrera was initially charged for Jaramillo's murder, but after he claimed he was defending a friend and the charge was dropped.
The family thought it was over but said it has only gotten worse.
"When we hear that Mother's Day is coming around we think, 'Oh my God,'" Jaramillo's cousin said. "We start thinking the whole tragedy that happened. Since that day, it's only got worse."
Ruiz was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
"On May 2 he was said to have driven by the house, had a shot gun and cocked it," police spokesperson Celina Westervelt said. "He threatened the female, the mother, and her niece and nephew."
Police said they've learned the threats could escalate this weekend because Saturday is the 10-year anniversary of Jaramillo's death. So this Mother's Day weekend police will patrol the family's home.
"This isn't the first time they've come to the streets and pointed guns at us," Jaramillo's cousin said.
Police have not said if Ruiz acted alone this time. However, Jaramillo's family believes Herrera was with him in the car.
The family said they just want peace this Mother's Day for Jaramillo's mom.
"She'll get watery eyes and have to go inside and just be alone because it hurts her everyday," Jaramillo's cousin said.
Even though Herrera did not face a murder charge for Jaramillo's death, Jaramillo's family is still trying to have the District Attorney's Office reopen the case. They believe that's why Herrera's family is angry with them.
Police said they recovered two guns during the arrest of Ruiz. They would not say if they were used in any of the alleged threats.
