ALBQUERQUE (KRQE) - An order signed by District Court Judge Brett Loveless paves the way for the case against Telyith Fontayne Hopkins to move forward.
Hopkins is accused of murdering two people in March of 2012.
According to police, he did not know either of the victims but rather chose them at random.
APD said Hopkins laid out in detail how he killed them.
The first victim was a hotel maid. She was raped, stabbed then strangled with a telephone cord while she worked at The Plaza Inn Hotel off I-25.
The second victim was bludgeoned with a rock and also strangled with a phone cord.
According to APD, Hopkins told police he did that so the detective would see a pattern.
Since that confession, Hopkins has not said much.
Last year, his attorney questioned whether his client even understood what was going on, asking that Hopkins be evaluated for competency.
Hopkins was initially found incompetent and sent to the state's behavioral health institute in Las Vegas where he was treated for competency.
In July, Judge Loveless ruled he could stand trial but Hopkins' attorney challenged that ruling.
However, according to court documents, the attorney withdrew his challenge after talking to his client and reviewing the final report from Las Vegas.
With the legal wrangling over Hopkins' competency settled, the judge has ruled the case can move forward. A trial date is set for February 2014.
