The third, NM State Police Officer Steven Carroll is recovering in the hospital after being stabbed during a traffic stop late Wednesday night.
Interim State Police Chief Robert Shilling said Carroll pulled a car over near Airport Road and Fairly Road on Santa Fe's southwest side around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. Carroll had the suspect, later identified as Ricky O. Gonzales, 39, step out of the vehicle and do a DWI field-sobriety test.
Gonzales then took off on foot.
Carroll eventually caught up with him and a fight with a struggle for Carroll's weapon started. Police said Gonzales stabbed the Carroll in the abdomen just below his protective vest, but the officer was able to pull his gun and shoot the suspect at least once.
Carroll radioed for backup, and both men were taken to the Christus St. Vincent's. Carroll was rushed into emergency surgery and reported to be stable in recovery. There was no word on the condition of Gonzales, but he is awake and talking to officers.
