SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) - Santa Fe County Sheriff's deputies arrest three boys following a renegade crime spree.
Three boys were arrested Sunday following a day-long crime spree. It ended when a 12 year-old driver, who admitted he was high on pot, rolled a stolen car near the intersection of Airport Road and State Road 599. Investigators say the boy also had on a GPS tracking bracelet, because has been on probation since he was 10.
According to investigators the crime spree started when the 12 year-old and two 15 year-old boys stole two bikes from a mobile home on Calle Inez. They say the boys then waited for the homeowner to leave, broke the window of the home with a rock and then lifted some car keys. They used the keys to swipe the resident's car and took off. On their way they almost hit an off-duty cop in an unmarked vehicle, and that officer then called the sheriff's department.
The 12 year-old driver led deputies on a high speed chase with his two passengers inside. After he flipped the car, officers found stolen electronics inside and smelled pot. The boys told police they had sold some of their loot for drugs and had been smoking pot prior to the crash.
All three were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. The 12 year-old faces DWI, motor vehicle theft, burglary, eluding and reckless driving charges. He is also charged for driving without a license. The 15 year-olds are charged with vehicle theft and burglary.
